Trail report

The Highwood country is where Kananaskis shows off. This loop climbs from the Elbow Valley over high passes with wildflower meadows, crystal creeks, and bighorn sheep that own the ridgelines.

It's a genuine alpine route: long climbs, loose sections, and weather that can turn from bluebird to blizzard inside an hour. Stretch it into two days and camp on the high benches.

You're above 7,000 feet for much of the route, so bring warm layers even in August. The Kananaskis Conservation Pass is required for every vehicle.
