12 Essential Recovery Items for Every Rig

The recovery kit that fits in most rigs and covers 95% of situations you'll actually encounter on the trail.

Field guide · Gear

Recovery isn't about the biggest winch you can bolt on — it's about having the right tools, knowing how to use them, and keeping your head. Here's the kit we recommend for every rig, from weekend stock to full expedition build.

  • Recovery boards
  • Kinetic recovery rope (rated)
  • Tow strap (rated, separate from kinetic)
  • 4x soft shackles
  • Winch (or solid recovery points)
  • Tree saver strap
  • Gloves + eye protection
  • Shovel and traction aids
  • Hi-lift jack (and know how to use it)
  • Tire repair kit + air compressor
  • First aid kit
  • Fire extinguisher (rated for vehicles)

The two straps rule

Never confuse a kinetic rope with a static tow strap. Kinetic ropes stretch and convert momentum into energy — perfect for pulling a stuck rig. Static straps are for towing a dead vehicle. Using them interchangeably is how straps snap and windshields break.

Know your recovery points

Before you need them, identify your rated recovery points front and rear. Never hook to a bumper, tie-down loop, or axle unless you're sure it's rated. Practice with your gear in a parking lot so the first time you use it isn't on a remote ledge.

Pro tip: The most important recovery item isn't in this list: judgment. If a pull feels wrong, it is wrong. Slow down, reassess, and ask for help.
