The spot

About this campsite

Jones Lake (Wahleach Reservoir) Recreation Site sits nestled in a dramatic high-elevation bowl surrounded by the craggy peaks of the Cheam Range near Laidlaw and Hope.

Managed in partnership between BC Hydro and Recreation Sites and Trails BC, the site offers two distinct camping areas (West Creek and Boulder Creek) with rustic lakeside sites, fire rings, and pit toilets.

The steep 9 km gravel Forest Service Road ascends over 500 vertical meters with loose gravel and switchbacks, requiring good brakes and high-clearance 4WD vehicles. It is extremely popular with rooftop tent overlanders, kayakers, and anglers targeting rainbow trout.

What makes it worth the drive

  • Mount Cheam mountain reflections
  • Subalpine reservoir shoreline
  • Overland 4x4 road challenge
  • Paddling & trout fishing

The view across the lake toward Mount Cheam is unmatched in the Fraser Valley. The FSR up is steep and rough, but my truck handled it fine.
